WEIGHTLIFTER Muhammad Fazrul Azrie Mohdad presented the best birthday gift to his mother by winning an unexpected bronze medal in the men’s below 56kg category.
The 22-year-old Fazrul lifted a total of 328kg – 145kg in snatch and 183kg in clean and jerk – at the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre yesterday.
He also set two national records in the clean and jerk and total. The previous record in clean and jerk is 182kg and total 327kg.
Fazrul’s mother Siti Hajar Mohd Jasar, who turned 46 yesterday, is also due to give birth to her fourth child next month.
Fazrul did not have a good lift in the snatch as he only managed 145kg and failed in two attempts to lift 150kg.
But that did not dampen his spirit as he did well to lift all three attempts – 175kg, 181kg and 183kg in the snatch and clean and jerk.
Fazrul thought his chance of winning a medal was virtually over as there were three other athletes who were yet to lift after he completed his clean and jerk lifts.
But two of the lifters failed in their attempts and Fazrul won the unexpected medal.
Fazrul was in tears as he hugged team manager Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim.
“I came to Gold Coast with no expectation but I’m happy to return with a medal.
I was surprised with my efforts after failing to lift 150kg in two attempts in the snatch.
“I was in tears as it was my first Commonwealth Games and I did well to deliver a medal for Malaysia,” said Fazrul.
“The medal is my birthday present for my mother.
“Winning the medal is good for my career in weightlifting,” said Fazrul, who also improved his personal best by one kilogramme.
It was Malaysia’s third medal in weightlifting.
To date, Malaysia have two golds and one bronze. Weightlifters Muhammad Azroy Hazalwafie Izhar Ahmad won the first gold in the below 56kg followed by the second gold by Mohd Aznil Bidin in the below 62kg category on Thursday.
India’s Rahul Ragala won the gold with 338kg while Don Opeloge of Samoa bagged the silver with a total of 331kg.
